Community Service
Part of Scouting’s principles is service to others without expectation of payment or recognition in return or a good turn. what is a good turn? Some Good Turns are big—saving a life, helping out after floods or other disasters, recycling community trash, working with others on
conservation projects, or it could be a task or gesture of kindness offered sincerely without the expectation or payment or recognition in return. This is a big part of Scouting for several reasons. First, it teaches the Scouts the importance of service to others for the greater good, to make the world a better place for all. Second, it teaches the boys leadership and responsibility because they plan and execute community service projects that they lead under the guidance of adult leadership. Finally, it creates a sense of pride and civic mindedness amoungst Scouts because it makes them aware of the needs of the community and it gives them a great sense of pride and accomplishment for the projects which they have completed.

All proceeds of which benefit the American Cancer Society which offers support to individuals fighting cancer and their families, funds research for a cure, and advocates laws to make preventable cancers minimal. Flag Retirement Ceremonies-There are few better known symbols of America than our flag, which has proudly flown for over 200 years in every state in this great nation and in our territories around the world to signify our unity one nation under God. as with anything that is outside for an extended period of time (especially in New England) weather has its tolls on it. according to the U.S. flag code “The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.” Few organizations offer a suitable retirement that is respectful and dignified as the Boy Scouts are, which is why they annually have a flag retirement day on or near a national day of patriotism and respect.
Honor Guards and Parades-Boy Scouts have a long and proud history of participating in and or displaying our nation’s colors in both parades and as acting as honor guards at events. Troop 11 has been in numerous parades over the years and has acted as honor guards for a variety of community events.
